Lake
Millerton Lake is a large reservoir on the San Joaquin River near Friant, about 15 miles north of Fresno, created by Friant Dam and managed for water storage, flood control and irrigation as part of the Central Valley Project.
The lake covers roughly 4,900 acres when full with about 40–47 miles of shoreline and supports wide recreational use—boating, water‑skiing, swimming, and year‑round fishing for bass, catfish, crappie and trout—plus campgrounds, picnic areas and trails within Millerton Lake State Recreation Area.
The project also produces hydroelectric power, serves as habitat for waterfowl and nesting bald eagles in places, and visitors should check current camping, boat launch, permit and safety information (and seasonal water levels) before planning a trip.
