The Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul, completed in 1905 and designed by architect Cass Gilbert, is a monumental example of Beaux-Arts and Renaissance Revival architecture. It was the third state capitol building after fire destroyed the first in 1881 and overcrowding made the second inadequate.
The building features a stunning white marble dome, the second largest self-supported marble dome in the world, inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The exterior primarily uses Georgia marble, with native Minnesota granite for the foundation and lower walls.
The interior is known for its elegant marble floors, grand staircases, and extensive artistic decorations, including murals and sculptures symbolizing Minnesota’s history and values. The Capitol served as the state's government center for all branches and housed the Minnesota Historical Society until recent office expansions relocated many functions.
It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and underwent a major restoration project to preserve its architectural and historic significance for future generations.
