Mission Santa Cruz is the 12th of California’s Spanish Franciscan missions, founded in 1791 by Father Fermín Lasuén and named for the Holy Cross; the original adobe complex on the San Lorenzo River was repeatedly damaged by floods and earthquakes, so today a replica mission church and adjacent historic buildings stand near the original site and serve as an active parish and visitor destination.
The mission’s early history involves missionization of Ohlone (Amah Mutsun) and other local Indigenous people, agricultural production, and later secularization and decline in the 19th century before much of the property returned to the Catholic Church.
Visitors can see the small 1930s-era reconstructed chapel, a mission gallery of artifacts and art, and nearby preserved Native housing and mission-era ruins interpreted at the Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park; hours and exhibits are managed locally by the parish and state park.
