Montgomery Zoo and Mann Wildlife Learning Museum, Alabama, United States

Zoo

The Montgomery Zoo in Alabama began as a small children's zoo in Oak Park during the 1920s, featuring animals like alligators, monkeys, and bears alongside attractions such as a train and carousel.

After closing during the 1960s due to racial tensions, it reopened in 1972 at its current location with around six acres and a petting zoo. It expanded significantly in 1991 to 40 acres, adding barrier-free exhibits divided into five continental realms, Africa, Australia, Asia, North America, and South America—allowing visitors to view animals in more naturalistic, multi-species habitats.

The zoo’s collection includes animals such as Bengal tigers, black bears, Indian rhinoceroses, cheetahs, and elephants. In 2003, the Mann Wildlife Learning Museum opened on zoo grounds offering educational exhibits focused on wildlife and conservation.

The zoo hosts annual events attracting thousands and continues growing as a major regional attraction with a focus on animal welfare and public education.
