Volcano
Mount Saint Helens is an active stratovolcano located in the Cascade Range in Washington State.
It is most famous for its catastrophic eruption on May 18, 1980, which was the most economically destructive volcanic event in U.S. history. Prior to this eruption, Mount Saint Helens was a symmetrical cone standing nearly 9,677 feet tall. The eruption caused a massive landslide of about 13% of the mountain's volume, resulting in a huge crater approximately one mile wide and two miles long, and reduced the mountain’s height significantly.
The violent explosion released ash, pumice, and gases, producing an ash cloud that reached 16 miles into the atmosphere and caused ash falls as far as Montana. The eruption also triggered mudflows and pyroclastic flows, devastating surrounding areas and killing 57 people, with thousands of animals lost. The event drastically altered the landscape, leaving a horseshoe-shaped crater and a barren, desolate region that continues to be studied.
Mount Saint Helens remains a highly active volcano; it experienced additional activity through seismic swarms and small eruptions after the major event, and it is closely monitored today for ongoing geological activity.
