Botanical Garden
The New Jersey Botanical Garden, also known as the New Jersey State Botanical Garden at Skylands, is located in Ringwood State Park in the Ramapo Mountains of Ringwood, New Jersey.
It covers 96 cultivated acres within a larger 1,117-acre estate that was originally the Skylands Farm, developed in the early 1900s by investment banker Clarence Lewis, who collected a vast array of exotic and local plants. The gardens were designed by prominent landscape architects and feature diverse areas such as the Winter Garden, Magnolia Walk, Perennial Garden, and Moraine Garden, showcasing both formal and naturalistic plantings.
The Tudor-style Skylands Manor, built from local granite, is a central historic feature surrounded by woodlands, ponds, and trails. The garden is open year-round, offering visitors an immersive experience with seasonal blooms, native trees, and educational tours, blending historical architecture with botanical beauty and conservation. It is listed on both State and National Registers of Historic Places.
