Bridge
The New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, West Virginia, is a steel arch bridge spanning 3,030 feet in length and soaring 876 feet above the New River Gorge, making it one of the longest single-span steel arch bridges in the world and the highest bridge east of the Mississippi River.
Designed by the Michael Baker Company and built by U.S. Steel's American Bridge Division, construction started in 1973 and was completed in 1977 at a cost of about $37 million. The bridge features a 1,700-foot-long arch made of COR-TEN steel, which develops a rust-like protective coating that minimizes maintenance and blends with the natural surroundings.
During construction, innovative techniques like cable trolleys and a tie-back system supported massive steel sections until the arch was self-supporting. The bridge dramatically improved transportation by reducing travel time across the gorge from 45 minutes to less than a minute and remains a vital part of U.S. Route 19. It is also famous for the annual Bridge Day festival where visitors can walk across and even base jump off the bridge, attracting thousands of spectators each year.
