Historical Landmark
Portland Head Light, located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and one of the most iconic maritime landmarks in the United States.
Built between 1787 and 1791 under the guidance of President George Washington, it was constructed using local granite and stone. Originally equipped with whale oil lamps, the lighthouse was first lit on January 10, 1791, to mark the entrance to Portland Harbor and guide ships safely through the rocky coastline.
Over the years, it underwent several upgrades, including the installation of a Fresnel lens in the 1850s, and an elevation increase during the Civil War to improve visibility. Today, the lighthouse stands 80 feet tall, with a white conical structure that is visible from 16 miles away, and continues to operate as an aid to navigation.
The site also includes a museum and offers visitors picturesque views, making it a popular destination for tourists and photographers alike.
