Historical Place
Poverty Point World Heritage Site in northeastern Louisiana is an extraordinary archaeological site dating back to between 1700 and 1100 B.C., built by a pre-agricultural society known as the Poverty Point culture.
It features a complex arrangement of six rows of concentric earthen ridges and multiple large mounds, including one of the largest in North America called Mound A, all situated on an elevated area overlooking the Mississippi River floodplain. The site reflects an advanced and sophisticated community of hunter-fisher-gatherers that amassed and moved vast amounts of soil by hand to create this intricate earthwork complex, which served residential, ceremonial, and social functions.
Despite lacking agriculture, the inhabitants established an extensive trade network spanning hundreds of miles, importing stones, soapstone, and other materials from distant mountain regions to create tools, vessels, and ornaments. Poverty Point was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962, opened to the public as a state historic site in 1976, became a U.S. national monument in 1988, and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
The site includes an interpretive museum, guided tours, and special events that help visitors understand the remarkable cultural and historical significance of North America's most complex pre-Columbian earthworks.
