The President William Jefferson Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site in Hope, Arkansas, preserves the early childhood home of the 42nd U.S. president, Bill Clinton.
Built in 1917 by Dr. H.S. Garrett, the two-and-a-half-story American Foursquare-style house belonged to Clinton’s maternal grandparents, Edith and Eldridge Cassidy. Clinton, born William Jefferson Blythe III on August 19, 1946, at nearby Julia Chester Hospital, lived here for the first four years of his life while his mother, Virginia, studied nursing in New Orleans.
The home, featuring original woodwork, a front porch, and a restored interior, reflects the modest environment where Clinton’s values of equality and public service began to form. Managed by the National Park Service since 2010, the site includes a visitor center with interpretive exhibits and a memorial garden dedicated to his mother, Virginia Kelley.
It stands today as a symbol of Clinton’s roots and his often-quoted belief in “a place called Hope”.
