Historical Place
Read House and Gardens in New Castle, Delaware, is a historic estate built between 1797 and 1804 for George Read II, son of the Declaration of Independence signer and Delaware statesman George Read.
At the time of its completion, the mansion was the largest and most sophisticated private home in Delaware, representing high-style Federal architecture influenced by contemporary Philadelphia design. The property spans 2.5 acres along the Delaware River and features formal gardens first laid out in the mid-19th century by later owner William Couper.
Over the centuries, the estate has seen a succession of owners, each leaving their mark through architectural updates and garden designs, while the Delaware Historical Society has managed the site since 1975, maintaining much of its original layout and historical integrity.
Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2016, Read House and Gardens preserves centuries of Delaware history from the era of the Lenape people through colonial times and up to the present, offering museum tours, events, and educational programs that showcase its architectural grandeur and layered heritage.
