Historical Landmark
Salvation Mountain is a colorful hillside visionary environment created by artist Leonard Knight over 28 years, located in the California Desert near Niland, close to the community of Slab City.
Made from adobe, hay bales, discarded tires, and thousands of gallons of donated paint, the mountain is covered with vibrant murals, Christian sayings, and Bible verses, centered around the message “God is Love.” Knight began the project in 1984 with the aim to spread a simple, powerful message of love and faith. Despite challenges such as weather damage and the harsh desert environment, the artwork has been recognized as a national folk art site and a unique cultural landmark attracting thousands of visitors weekly.
After Knight’s passing in 2014, efforts by volunteers and a dedicated nonprofit continue to preserve this iconic, handmade monument, which stands as a testament to devotion, creativity, and community in a remote desert setting.
