Historical Place
The Seabrook-Wilson House, located in Port Monmouth, New Jersey, is one of the oldest surviving houses in the Bayshore region, with its earliest section dating back to around 1720.
Originally starting as a small cabin, it was expanded over centuries by the Seabrook family, who lived there for about 250 years. The house has deep historical ties to the area’s maritime and social history, with members of the family including Revolutionary War militia officers and local leaders.
In the 19th century, the area around the house grew into a bustling port due to steamboat and railroad development, and the house itself was turned into a boarding house and tavern in the early 1900s. By the mid-20th century, the house fell into disrepair but was saved from demolition by local residents and township efforts, later restored and converted into an activity center and museum as part of the Bayshore Waterfront Park.
The house is also local folklore's "Spy House," believed (though unconfirmed) to have been used for espionage during the Revolutionary War. Today, it serves as a historic site offering exhibits on local ecology and history.
