Shady Lane Cellars is a historic estate winery located near Suttons Bay, Michigan, with roots dating back to 1881 when the land was first owned by A.H. Petrie.
It was developed into a fruit farm famous for cherries and peaches before being transformed into a vineyard in 1989 by founders Bill Stouten and Joe O'Donnell. The winery became a bonded wine cellar in 1996 and opened its charming tasting room, converted from an 80-year-old chicken coop, in 1999. Covering around 145 acres, Shady Lane Cellars specializes in estate-grown wines, producing over 70 acres of vineyard with a focus on sustainable farming, achieving certifications like Sustainability in Practice (SIP).
The winery offers a variety of quality wines including sparkling, red, and white varietals, and continues to expand its facilities with plans supporting regenerative agriculture and hospitality. As a family-oriented business, it combines historical significance with modern winemaking techniques, remaining a celebrated destination in Michigan’s wine country.
