Historical Landmark
Smith Tower is a historic skyscraper in Seattle's Pioneer Square, completed in 1914 and named after industrialist Lyman Cornelius Smith.
At 462 feet tall with 38 stories, it was once the tallest building west of the Mississippi River and the tallest on the U.S. West Coast for nearly 50 years until 1962. The building was designed by architects Gaggin & Gaggin and cost between $1.25 and $1.7 million to construct, featuring advanced amenities for its time, including eight high-speed elevators and a unique "Chinese Room" at its observatory level modeled with intricate Asian-inspired decor.
The tower has remained a Seattle landmark since 1984 and is known for its neoclassical architecture and role in anchoring the city’s early 20th century commercial district. It combines historical charm with modern renovations, continuing to be a notable symbol of Seattle's skyline and heritage.
