Ski Resort
Snowshoe Mountain Resort in West Virginia opened on December 19, 1974, after the area had been logged from the early 1900s to 1960, leaving the mountain barren.
It was founded by Thomas "Doc" Brigham, a dentist who had experience developing ski areas and sought the best snow conditions in the South. Named after the snowshoe hare native to the region, the resort started with several ski lifts and skiable terrain on Cheat Mountain at an elevation of 4,848 feet.
The first decade was financially challenging, with bankruptcy filed twice, but Snowshoe’s popularity and infrastructure grew over time. In 1992, Snowshoe expanded by purchasing the nearby Silver Creek ski area. Today, the resort offers a wide range of winter and summer activities including skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, golf, lodging, and events, making it a major year-round destination in West Virginia's mountain landscape.
