Split Rock Lighthouse, perched on a 130-foot cliff on Lake Superior’s North Shore in Minnesota, was built in 1910 in response to a deadly November 1905 storm that caused the loss of 29 ships and many lives.
Designed by lighthouse engineer Ralph Russell Tinkham, the brick octagonal tower and accompanying buildings were constructed without modern roads, requiring all materials to be brought in by water and lifted up the cliff. The light was first lit on July 31, 1910, and served as an essential navigational aid for over 50 years until it was decommissioned in 1969. The lighthouse is surrounded by several historic buildings including keepers' houses, an oil house, and a fog signal building, all restored to reflect the station’s 1920s appearance.
Today, operated by the Minnesota Historical Society as part of Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, it is a National Historic Landmark and a popular tourist destination known for its dramatic setting, scenic views of Lake Superior, and rich maritime history. The site also honors the memory of shipwrecks and continues to attract visitors fascinated by its beauty and historical significance.
