Lake
Stone Lake is a rare natural freshwater lake in Sacramento County, California, part of the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, an urban sanctuary 10 miles south of downtown Sacramento near Elk Grove.
It anchors over 6,500 acres of protected wetlands, grasslands, riparian forests, and sloughs in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta along the Pacific Flyway, hosting thousands of migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, great blue herons, Swainson's hawks, giant garter snakes, and the endangered valley elderberry longhorn beetle.
Managed jointly by California State Parks and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service since 1992 for conservation and flood control, public access focuses on Blue Heron Trails for walking, guided hikes, paddle tours, birdwatching, and seasonal waterfowl hunting, though core lake areas remain closed to preserve habitats.
