Sutro Baths

Sutro Baths, California, United States

Historical Landmark

The Sutro Baths, located in San Francisco near the Cliff House, opened in 1896 as the world's largest indoor swimming facility, built by Adolph Sutro, a wealthy former mayor of the city.

The expansive complex covered three acres and included seven saltwater pools heated to different temperatures, slides, diving boards, and stadium seating for thousands of spectators. It also featured a glass roof, natural history exhibits, art galleries, and hosted concerts and other entertainment. Designed to be an affordable recreational spot, entry cost was just 25 cents, including swimsuit and towel rental, making it accessible to working-class families.

Despite its grandeur and popularity, the Baths struggled financially for decades and eventually parts were converted into an ice-skating rink. In 1964, the property was sold to developers, and in 1966 a fire destroyed much of the structure during demolition. Today, only concrete ruins remain, preserved as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, marking the site of this once-impressive architectural and cultural landmark.
