Terrace Hill Historic Site

Terrace Hill Historic Site, Iowa, United States

Historical Landmark

Terrace Hill, completed in 1869 in Des Moines, Iowa, is a grand Victorian-era mansion known as one of the finest examples of Second Empire architecture in the United States.

Originally built by Benjamin Franklin Allen, Iowa's first millionaire, it cost $250,000 and was designed by notable Chicago architect William W. Boyington. After Allen lost his fortune, the mansion was sold to prominent businessman Frederick Hubbell and stayed in the Hubbell family for over 70 years. In 1971, the family donated Terrace Hill to the state, and since 1976, it has served as the official residence of Iowa's governors, beginning with Governor Robert D. Ray.

The mansion overlooks the Raccoon River and sits on about eight acres. Terrace Hill is not only a functioning governor's residence but also a National Historic Landmark known for its ornate architectural details, rich history, and role as a cultural and community center offering public tours and educational programs. Its history reflects Iowa's development and the wealth and influence of its early prominent citizens.
