Children's Museum
The Children's Museum of Indianapolis was founded in 1925 by Mary Stewart Carey, inspired by a visit to the Brooklyn Children's Museum, and started in a carriage house with collections donated by school children.
The museum moved several times before settling in the Carey mansion on Meridian Street in 1927, where it began to develop permanent exhibits focused on natural history, pioneer life, and various cultures. In 1976, a major fundraising campaign enabled the construction of a new, larger five-story building with modern facilities, including classrooms and the Ruth Allison Lilly Theater, making it the world's largest children's museum.
Over the years, the museum has added galleries such as Mysteries in History, Passport to the World, and a planetarium, continuously expanding its interactive exhibits and educational programs. Today, it hosts thousands of activities yearly, including plays, workshops, and traveling exhibits, with a mission to ignite joy, wonder, and curiosity through powerful learning experiences for children and adults alike.
