Wax Museum
The National Presidential Wax Museum in Keystone, South Dakota, is located just a few minutes from Mount Rushmore and offers a patriotic experience featuring over 100 lifelike wax figures, including all 46 U.S. presidents.
Founded in 1971 by Hollywood wax sculptor Madame Katherine Stubergh and movie set designers Don and Bonnie McPhee, the museum was originally named the Parade of Presidents Wax Museum. After a period of closure in the late 1990s, it was renovated and reopened in 2000 under its current name. The museum presents iconic moments from U.S. presidential history with detailed surroundings and period costumes, and visitors can enjoy a self-guided audio tour and watch a seven-minute video illustrating how the wax sculptures are created.
It also features interactive experiences like a recreation of the White House press briefing room where visitors can simulate giving a speech. The museum continues to update exhibits with new presidents as they are elected, showcasing original paintings and historical artifacts related to U.S. leadership. It is open seasonally from April through October and serves as a popular family attraction in the Black Hills region.
