Historical Landmark
The Old Round Church in Richmond, Vermont, built in 1812-1813, is a unique sixteen-sided meeting house and former church that stands as one of the rarest architectural forms in North America.
Designed by local craftsman William Rhodes, the church was built to serve as a shared meeting place for the town and five Protestant congregations, combining functions of worship and town governance. Its distinct polygonal shape, sometimes seen as a way to keep the devil from hiding in corners, features Federal period styling, wooden clapboard siding, and a two-tiered octagonal belfry at the center of its sixteen-sided roof.
Inside, it retains many original features such as enclosed pews and a central pulpit. The church’s design was inspired by a demolished sixteen-sided church from Rhodes' hometown and pattern books of the time.
Today, the Old Round Church is preserved by the Richmond Historical Society, opens to the public in summer and fall, and is used for special events like weddings, celebrated for its rare form and historic significance as a National Historic Landmark. Its combination of community, religion, and distinctive architecture makes it a standout landmark in Vermont’s history.
