Historical Landmark
Thompson's Mills State Heritage Site is Oregon's oldest water-powered grain mill, located near Shedd in Linn County along the Calapooia River, chronicling over 160 years of rural history from its 1858 construction through flour milling, feed production, and hydroelectric power until 2004.
Acquired by Oregon Parks and Recreation Department that year and opened to the public in 2007 under the "park-a-year" initiative, the 20-acre site features a six-story mill with still-operational turbines powered by a pre-statehood water right, plus restored outbuildings, an heirloom orchard, gardens, and heritage poultry on grounds open daily except major holidays.
Free guided and self-guided tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. demonstrate the machinery in action via an ADA-compliant main path, offering an immersive look at early settlement life amid tree-lined riverbanks and ongoing preservation efforts.
