Traverse City

Traverse City, Michigan, United States

Locality

Traverse City, Michigan, was originally inhabited by the Odawa people and known as Kitchiwikwedongsing, meaning “place at the head of the great bay.”

European settlement began in 1847 when Captain Horace Boardman purchased land at the mouth of the Boardman River and built a sawmill. In 1851, Perry Hannah, regarded as the city’s founding father, along with his partners, purchased the mill, which attracted more settlers and led to the establishment of Grand Traverse County with Boardman’s Mills (later Traverse City) as the county seat. The city’s name was shortened to Traverse City to avoid confusion with nearby Old Mission.

Timber and lumber industries drove early economic growth, supported by the arrival of the railroad in 1872, which connected Traverse City to wider markets. The Northern Michigan Asylum, now part of the city’s history, was established in the late 19th century and became a significant local employer. Today, Traverse City is known for its vibrant community, scenic location on Grand Traverse Bay, and as a hub for tourism, especially noted for its cherry orchards and annual National Cherry Festival.
