Nature Preserve

Tule Elk State Natural Reserve is a 960-acre protected area in Kern County, California, near Buttonwillow and 25 miles west of Bakersfield, dedicated to conserving the rare tule elk subspecies once nearly extinct due to 19th-century overhunting.

Established in 1953 after cattleman Henry Miller's efforts saved a remnant herd in the 1870s–1930s, it sustains 30–35 elk with ponds, supplemental feed, and interpretive exhibits at a visitor center, viewing platform, picnic areas, and restrooms, open Friday–Sunday from 9 a.m. to sunset with an $8 vehicle fee.

Most land remains closed as ecologically sensitive, with monthly ranger-led tours (except December) on the fourth Saturday at 10 a.m., pets prohibited in core areas, and peak elk activity from late summer to early autumn amid neighboring oil fields and wildlife refuges.
