Monument
Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument in Nevada, located just north of Las Vegas in the upper Las Vegas Wash, spans 22,650 acres and was established in 2014 to protect one of the largest Ice Age fossil assemblages in the Southwest, dating from about 100,000 to 12,500 years ago.
The site preserves thousands of Pleistocene fossils from ancient desert wetlands, including mammoths with massive tusks, American lions, giant ground sloths, camels, horses, dire wolves, bison, and saber-toothed cats, alongside evidence of early human inhabitants and rare plants like the Las Vegas bearpoppy.
Managed by the National Park Service, it offers self-guided trails, ranger programs, and the historic "Big Dig" excavation site for visitors to explore paleontology, geology, and prehistoric climate changes while supporting current Mojave Desert wildlife in a vital urban corridor.
