Military School
The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, was established on October 10, 1845, by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft as a federal service academy to train officers for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
It is the second oldest of the five U.S. military academies and was founded on the grounds of the former Army post Fort Severn. Initially called the Naval School, it opened with 50 midshipmen and seven professors. The curriculum was designed to combine academic study with practical training at sea, evolving into a rigorous four-year program by 1851. During the Civil War, the academy temporarily relocated to Newport, Rhode Island, before returning to Annapolis in 1865.
The academy has grown extensively since its founding, expanding its campus and student body to prepare officers with a blend of leadership, technical, and naval skills essential for service. Graduates earn bachelor’s degrees and commissions as officers, committing to serve in the Navy or Marine Corps.
