The West Virginia Governor's Mansion, located in Charleston beside the Kanawha River, is the official residence for the state's governor.
Completed in 1925, it was designed by local architect Walter F. Martens in the Georgian Colonial Revival style, with guidance from Cass Gilbert, who designed the nearby state capitol. The mansion features a red brick exterior, a grand columned porch, black and white marble floors in the entry foyer, and elegant rooms including a drawing room, ballroom, state dining room, library, and sitting room.
The second floor contains the governor's private quarters and family rooms, while the third floor includes guest bedrooms, making a total of about 30 rooms. It stands as a historic and aesthetic complement to the Capitol Complex, hosting dignitaries and public officials over decades.
The mansion replaced the state's first governor's residence bought in 1893 and was part of rebuilding efforts after the old state capitol burned down in 1921. Over the years, the residence has seen several renovations and expansions, including gardens and staff quarters, remaining a symbol of state governance and history.
