The West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville operated from 1866 to 1995 and is a large Gothic-style prison known for its imposing stone walls and fortress-like appearance.
Originally built to replace inadequate facilities, it housed over 800 men and a smaller number of women in its early years, but overcrowding became severe by the mid-20th century with up to 2,000 inmates in cramped conditions. The prison experienced riots, fires, and harsh conditions over the decades, and between 1899 and 1959, 94 men were executed there, mostly by hanging.
The facility was criticized for outdated practices and was eventually closed following a 1986 court ruling that its small cells constituted cruel and unusual punishment. Since its closure, the penitentiary has been preserved as a historic site and tourist attraction offering guided tours, and it is reputed to be one of the most haunted prisons in the country.
It also serves as a police training facility and filming location, allowing visitors to explore its turbulent history and architecture today.
