Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack, located on Wheeling Island in West Virginia, began as Wheeling Downs, a thoroughbred horse race track, in 1937.
After a fire in 1962, it closed for five years and later reopened with standardbred harness racing before transitioning to greyhound racing in 1976 due to declining attendance. Owned by Delaware North since 1988, the venue expanded to include a hotel, a large casino with over 2,300 slot machines, table games, dining options, and a showroom.
It was renamed Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack in 2008 when table games were added. Besides racing and gambling, the site hosted the Wheeling Jamboree, one of the oldest country music radio broadcasts. Today, it remains a major entertainment complex with live greyhound racing, gaming, lodging, and dining, serving as a key destination for regional visitors.
