Historical Place
Whitman Mission National Historic Site, located near Walla Walla, Washington, preserves the site of the first Protestant mission established in the Pacific Northwest in 1836 by Dr. Marcus Whitman and his wife Narcissa.
The mission was founded to serve the Cayuse people with medical care, education, and agricultural training. It later became a critical stop for settlers traveling the Oregon Trail. Tensions rose between the settlers and the indigenous Cayuse after a devastating measles epidemic in 1847, which killed many Cayuse but fewer settlers, sparking suspicion and fear.
On November 29, 1847, members of the Cayuse attacked the mission, killing the Whitmans and eleven others, an event that led to the Cayuse War and marked a turning point in the region's history. The site now includes a memorial obelisk, a museum exhibiting artifacts, and interpretive programs that explore the cultural clash and its lasting impact on Native American and settler relations in the early American West.
