Castle
Wilson Castle, located in Proctor, Vermont, is a remarkable 19th-century estate built between 1885 and 1893 by Dr. John Johnson, a Vermont-born physician who married an English aristocrat.
The castle is an architectural blend of Dutch Neo-Renaissance, Scottish Baronial, Queen Anne, and Romanesque Revival styles, featuring a façade of English brick and French marble, 19 proscenium arches, 84 stained glass windows, two turrets, and a balcony. Inside, it boasts 32 rooms spread over three stories with 13 fireplaces decorated with imported tiles, along with Asian and European antiques, statuary, Chinese scrolls, and oriental rugs.
Initially constructed to impress Dr. Johnson's wife, who only lived there for a few years before returning to England, the castle later changed hands several times before being owned by the Wilson family from 1939 to 2009.
The Wilson family made the estate notable in Vermont history, especially with Herbert Lee Wilson's pioneering radio work from the castle stable. Today, it operates as a house museum and wedding venue, offering tours that allow visitors to experience its rich history, unique architecture, and eclectic collections firsthand. The castle’s mix of styles, grandeur, and connection to both local and aristocratic histories make it a distinct Vermont landmark.
