World's Largest Teapot, West Virginia, United States

Monument

The World's Largest Teapot in Chester, West Virginia, is a 14-foot-tall and 14-foot-wide wooden structure originally built as a giant Hires Root Beer barrel in Pennsylvania in the early 1900s.

In 1938, local pottery businessman William "Babe" Devon purchased the barrel, shipped it to Chester, and transformed it into a teapot by adding a spout, handle, and lid to symbolize the region’s once-thriving pottery industry. It served as an advertisement and a sales kiosk for pottery, snacks, and souvenirs for many years.

The teapot has been moved several times, restored multiple times by community efforts, and now stands near the Jennings Randolph Bridge on the former site of Rock Springs Park amusement park. It remains a beloved local landmark and symbol of Chester's industrial heritage, drawing visitors for its quirky size and rich history. The teapot can hold over 13,000 gallons if it were filled with tea and has a dedicated annual Teapot Day fundraiser celebrating its preservation.
