Locality
Acoma Pueblo, also called Sky City, is a historic Native American village atop a 357-foot-high mesa in northwestern New Mexico, about 45 miles southwest of Albuquerque.
It is known as one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States, with roots tracing back to between 1075 and 1200 C.E., and possibly earlier according to local traditions. The pueblo’s isolated location provided defense against raids and allowed the Acoma people to develop rich cultural traditions.
Spanish explorers arrived in the late 1500s and established missions, introducing Catholicism and new crops, but faced resistance culminating in the 1680 Pueblo Revolt. The San Esteban del Rey Mission Church, built in the early 1600s and still in use, stands as a testament to Spanish influence.
Acoma blends Native and Spanish cultures today and remains significant for its artistry, architecture, and cultural heritage, with access now provided by a road replacing the traditional ladder and cliff path entry.
