Tourist Attraction
Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, located 40 miles southwest of Santa Fe near Cochiti Pueblo in north-central New Mexico, features dramatic cone-shaped hoodoos or tent rocks formed 6 to 7 million years ago from Jemez volcanic eruptions that deposited over 1,000 feet of pumice, ash, and tuff, later eroded by wind and water into light-colored spires up to 90 feet tall topped by harder caprock.
Managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Cochiti Pueblo—whose Keresan name means "white cliffs"—the 6.4-square-mile site on the Pajarito Plateau offers a 1.2- to 3-mile national recreation trail with a narrow Slot Canyon Trail winding through sculpted passages to a mesa overlook at 6,760 feet, plus a shorter Cave Loop for varied views amid juniper woodlands, manzanita shrubs, and wildlife like elk, deer, and hawks.
Visitors need timed reservations via recreation.gov and a Cochiti Pueblo access pass, with no pets or drones allowed on foot-only paths ideal for hiking, birdwatching, and geologic wonder in this otherworldly desert landscape.
