The Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery is a historic Greek Revival building completed in 1851 on the site of an earlier capitol that burned down in 1849.
It features a grand three-story hexastyle portico with Composite order columns and has undergone several expansions over the years, including rear and side wings added between 1885 and 1912. Much of the distinctive woodwork, including its famous spiral staircases, was crafted by African American master carpenter Horace King.
The capitol served as the first capital of the Confederate States of America in 1861, where Jefferson Davis was inaugurated, and it played a central role in the Civil Rights Movement, notably as the endpoint of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Today, the building operates as a working museum, housing the governor’s office and executive branch, with public access to restored chambers and the rotunda adorned with murals depicting Alabama's history. It stands as a National Historic Landmark symbolizing political, architectural, and cultural milestones.
