Wildlife Refuge
The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC), located at Mile 79 of the Seward Highway near Portage in Southcentral Alaska, is a 200-acre non-profit sanctuary dedicated to conserving, researching, educating about, and caring for Alaska’s native wildlife.
Founded in 1993 as Big Game Alaska and renamed in 2007, the center provides a permanent home for orphaned, injured, or displaced animals that cannot survive in the wild. AWCC houses a wide variety of species including bears, moose, wood bison, muskox, wolves, and porcupines, all living in spacious habitats that replicate their natural environments.
The center serves as an important educational resource with tours and encounters that raise awareness of Alaskan wildlife and conservation challenges. It partners with local government agencies and indigenous groups in restoration and protection efforts, such as the wood bison reintroduction project.
Visitors can observe animals displaying natural behaviors against the scenic backdrop of Turnagain Arm and the Chugach Mountains, making AWCC a premier wildlife destination in Alaska.
