Mountain Range
The Kenai Mountains in south-central Alaska form a rugged range stretching about 120 miles (190 kilometers) northeast from the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula toward the Chugach Mountains.
Rising to average elevations between 3,000 and 5,000 feet, with peaks nearing 5,000 feet, the range is known for its dramatic glaciated scenery. Two vast icefields—the Harding and Sargent Icefields—dominate the landscape, feeding numerous glaciers that carve deep valleys and flow into Kenai Fjords National Park and nearby waterways.
The mountains are also the source of several major rivers, including the Kenai and Russian Rivers, which are world-renowned for salmon runs. The Dena’ina people traditionally call the range Yaghanen Dghili, meaning “good land mountains.”
Its mix of towering peaks, fjords, and icefields creates a striking contrast with the surrounding coastal lowlands along Cook Inlet and the Gulf of Alaska, offering some of the most impressive alpine and glacial scenery in the state.
