Historical Landmark
The Anaconda Smelter Stack is a 585‑foot‑tall brick smokestack built in 1918–1919 as part of the Washoe copper smelter for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company in Anaconda, Montana, and is one of the tallest free‑standing brick structures in the world.
It was designed to lift smoke and fumes from the smelting operations high into the air, reducing ground‑level pollution, and operated for decades before the smelter closed in 1980–1981. After the company wanted to demolish the stack, local residents successfully campaigned to save it, and in 1986 it became Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park, standing today as an iconic landmark that symbolizes the town’s long copper‑mining history and the environmental cleanup that followed.
