Medicine Rocks State Park in southeastern Montana is a small, remote state park known for its striking sandstone pillars that rise up to about 60–80 feet above rolling prairie grasslands, giving the landscape a sculpted, “Swiss-cheese” appearance shaped by millions of years of wind and water erosion.
Long regarded as a sacred place and a site of “big medicine” for Plains Indian tribes, the area contains numerous Native American petroglyphs and pictographs on the rock faces, as well as historic carvings left by early settlers, which together contributed to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
The park covers roughly 330 acres near the town of Ekalaka and offers a quiet, primitive experience with a handful of basic campsites, short hiking trails, and opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography, and stargazing under exceptionally dark skies recognized by its designation as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary.
