Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve State Natural Reserve is a 1,800-acre protected area in the rural west side of northern Los Angeles County's Antelope Valley, California, about 15 miles west of Lancaster at 2,600 to 3,000 feet elevation in the Mojave Desert's grassland habitat.
Known for the most consistent superbloom displays of bright orange California poppies—the state flower—alongside owl's-clover, lupine, goldfields, and cream cups from mid-February to mid-May depending on winter rainfall, it preserves untouched fields where sheep grazing ended in the 1970s and pronghorn antelope once roamed.
Open year-round from sunrise to sunset with an interpretive center, seven miles of easy rolling-hill trails including a wheelchair-accessible paved loop, and $10 parking, visitors enjoy hiking, photography, and fall's milder weather without artificial watering to maintain natural cycles.
