The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, also known as the Whittier Tunnel, is a 2.5-mile-long dual-use tunnel located in Alaska, connecting the cities of Whittier and Porter near Prince William Sound.
It is the longest combined highway and railroad tunnel in North America and the only tunnel in the United States designed to withstand extreme conditions, including temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit and winds up to 150 mph. Built originally as a railroad tunnel in 1943, it was converted in the late 1990s for combined vehicle and train use, allowing one lane of alternating traffic through the tunnel on top of the single railroad track.
Operation and maintenance are handled by a private contractor that also manages toll collection, train and vehicle scheduling, and safety systems. The tunnel features advanced ventilation with jet fans, built-in safe houses for emergencies, and is vital for access to Whittier, serving freight, passenger vehicles, and ferry connections, making it a key transportation route in the region.
