State Park
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California is the largest state park in California and the third largest in the U.S., spanning 650,000 acres across eastern San Diego County and parts of Imperial and Riverside counties.
Named after Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza and the native desert bighorn sheep (borrego), the park features diverse desert landscapes including dramatic badlands, palm oases, slot canyons, mountain ranges, and vast desert plains. It offers over 500 miles of dirt roads, extensive hiking and horse trails, and 12 designated wilderness areas.
Visitors often come for hiking, wildlife viewing, spectacular wildflower blooms in spring, and dark night skies that make it an International Dark Sky Park. The park is home to endangered species like desert bighorn sheep and showcases a rich geologic and fossil history. Popular spots include Borrego Palm Canyon, Blair Valley, and the artistically famous giant metal sculptures near Borrego Springs.
