Centered on the 93-acre man-made Argyle Lake—up to 37 feet deep and created after the state purchased farmland in 1948—it was once Argyle Hollow, a 19th-century stagecoach route dotted with coal, clay, and limestone mines.
Known as a fisherman's paradise for bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill, it offers boating, 5 miles of rugged hiking trails through hardwood forests and prairies, full-service camping, picnicking, hunting on 900 acres, birdwatching over 200 species, an archery range, equestrian trails, and winter sledding amid abundant beavers and wildflowers.
