Park
Arthur B. Ripley Desert Woodland State Park is a 566-acre preserve in northern Los Angeles County's Antelope Valley, California, about 20 miles west of Lancaster, protecting rare mature stands of Joshua trees and California junipers in their native Mojave Desert habitat, once widespread but now mostly cleared for agriculture and development.
Donated in 1988 by farmer Arthur "Archie" Ripley and established in 1993, it honors the cultural significance of Joshua trees, which provided food and fiber for Native Americans, with creamy white spring blossoms and interpretive displays highlighting local flora like blue sage, beavertail cactus, and transgender junipers that switch sexes over time.
Open sunrise to sunset with no water or pets allowed, visitors enjoy picnicking under a shade ramada, self-guided hikes on the flat 0.25-mile Ripley Nature Trail or 1-mile Rare Juniper Trail amid jackrabbits, coyotes, roadrunners, and rattlesnakes, offering a serene glimpse of vanishing desert woodland near the Poppy Reserve.
