Ashland, The Henry Clay Estate, located in Lexington, Kentucky, was the home of Henry Clay, a prominent 19th-century American statesman and politician.
Clay began acquiring the land in 1804 and built the original Federal-style home by 1809, expanding it with wings designed by architect Benjamin Latrobe between 1811 and 1814. The house was built using enslaved labor, as were the hemp and tobacco crops grown on the plantation.
After Henry Clay's death in 1852, the house fell into disrepair and was demolished by his son James, who rebuilt it in 1857 using parts of the original structure but updated with Greek Revival, Italianate, and Victorian architectural styles. The estate later became part of Kentucky University before returning to the Clay family in the 1880s, who modernized the home with indoor plumbing, gas lights, and electricity.
Ashland opened to the public as a historic house museum in 1950, preserving Clay's legacy and offering insight into his life, family, and impact on American history. It is now a National Historic Landmark and a cultural site reflecting the heritage of Kentucky and its notable statesman.
