Aztec Ruins National Monument

Aztec Ruins National Monument, New Mexico, United States

Ruin

Aztec Ruins National Monument in northwestern New Mexico preserves the remains of a large ancestral Puebloan settlement built mainly between 1100 and 1300 AD, mistakenly named by early settlers who thought it related to the Aztec Empire.

The site covers about 27 acres near the Animas River and includes six major archaeological areas with numerous connected rooms, kivas, and plazas, highlighting sophisticated stone masonry and community planning influenced by Chaco Canyon.

Excavated extensively from 1916 to 1923 under archaeologist Earl H. Morris, the monument features the only fully reconstructed Great Kiva in the Southwest, which offers a rare look inside ceremonial spaces. Designated a National Monument in 1923 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, it remains an important source for understanding Puebloan culture and regional history.
