Beach
Bean Hollow State Beach is a narrow 44-acre stretch of rugged San Mateo County coastline in California, located 17.5 miles south of Half Moon Bay and three miles south of Pescadero along Highway 1, featuring two distinct areas—Pebble Beach with its ocean-polished, colorful stones like agates and jade, and Arroyo de los Frijoles Beach with a sandy cove flanked by rocky tide pools teeming with anemones, crabs, sea urchins, and other marine life.
Acquired by the state in 1958, it connects the beaches via a one-mile self-guided nature trail along the bluffs, ideal for hiking, picnicking, fishing, beachcombing, and exploring tafoni "Swiss cheese" rock formations, though swimming is hazardous due to cold water, rip currents, heavy surf, and sharks.
Open daily from sunrise to sunset with free parking, chemical toilets, picnic tables, and no pebble collecting allowed, it offers a serene, dog-friendly escape amid native coastal plants and shorebirds.
