Beach
Thornton State Beach, a 58-acre park established in 1955 in Daly City just south of San Francisco along the Pacific coast, features a remote sandy beach backed by tall eroding bluffs, with a Mediterranean climate of frequent wind, cold temperatures, and summer fog.
Named for early settler Robert S. Thornton, it offers hiking and equestrian trails on bluff terraces, scenic ocean views from the Thornton Beach Vista overlook at the end of John Daly Boulevard, and informal beachcombing or fishing at low tide, though no facilities like restrooms exist and pets must stay leashed.
Closed to general public access below the bluffs due to ongoing landslide risks, visitors can park at limited spots near Skyline Boulevard for vista views or use unofficial trails to the shore, connecting north to Fort Funston or south toward Mussel Rock.
